Websites that work with a keyboard, a screen reader and tired eyes — designed in, not retrofitted.

Accessible Websites at PixelPlan Webdesign

(Introduction)

Accessibility is mostly solid craft: sufficient contrast, a clean heading structure, operability without a mouse, forms whose error messages make sense. We have always built to these standards because they make a site better for every visitor — including the ones squinting at a phone in sunlight or holding a coffee in one hand. Since the German Accessibility Strengthening Act took effect on 28 June 2025, a legal dimension has been added for some businesses.

The decisive factor is timing. Accessibility is cheap as a design constraint and expensive as a remediation project: retrofitting means changing structure, not swapping colours. So we settle contrast, heading hierarchy and keyboard paths during the concept phase rather than at the end. If a relaunch is due anyway, that is by far the cheapest moment.

Scope

What’s included.

  1. 01Assessment of the existing site: keyboard operation, contrast, structure, forms, media
  2. 02A contrast and typography scheme that works with your corporate identity rather than replacing it
  3. 03Semantic implementation: a real heading hierarchy, landmarks, properly labelled form fields
  4. 04Full keyboard operability, including a visible focus ring and menus you can escape from
  5. 05Alternative text for meaningful images — written by someone who knows what the image is for
  6. 06Testing with keyboard, screen reader and at 200 % zoom, on real devices
  7. 07A walkthrough for your team, so content added later does not reintroduce barriers

Process

How it works.

Step 01

Assessment

We work through your site systematically — keyboard only, then with a screen reader, then at heavy zoom — and write down what fails where. The result is a list ordered by how much damage each issue causes, not a score out of a hundred.

Step 02

Concept and build

Structure first: heading hierarchy, focus order, contrast. Details after. What can be fixed without rebuilding, we fix immediately; what is rooted in the site structure we name openly as the larger project it is.

Step 03

Test and hand over

A second pass with the same methods, so the improvement is demonstrated rather than asserted. We finish by showing your team what matters when adding content — most new barriers appear after launch.

No, and nobody reputable would promise you that. We build to the recognised standards and document what was tested. Whether your business falls under the BFSG, and what follows from that, is a legal assessment — that belongs with your lawyer, not with a web design agency.

No. We are a web design agency, not an audit body. If you need a formal audit or a declaration, a specialist testing organisation is the right address; we implement the requirements technically and work through their findings.

That depends entirely on the state of the existing site, so we will not quote a number here that would not apply to you. After the assessment you get a fixed price. On a new website, accessible implementation is part of the project and costs nothing extra.

Often not. Contrast, alternative text, form labels and focus styling can usually be solved on the existing site. If the problem sits in the site structure — nested menus, content only reachable by mouse — we will tell you honestly that rebuilding is cheaper than continued patching.

Yes, and you should. Put the mouse aside and operate your site using only the Tab key: can you always see where you are? Can you reach every link? Can you get back out of menus? Then set the browser to 200 % and check whether text is cut off. That finds most of it in ten minutes.

Indirectly, yes. A clean heading structure, labelled forms and alternative text are exactly what search engines read. That is not a ranking promise — but it is one of the few areas where the same work serves users and search engines at once.
