5 signs your website is costing you customers

Your website can look modern and still lose customers without you noticing. Usually it isn’t the design — it’s clarity, trust and friction at the moments that matter most.

5 signs your website is costing you customersConversion

In this article I’ll walk you through the most common warning signs, why visitors don’t get in touch, and what you can fix straight away without rebuilding everything.

1) People can’t tell what you offer within 5 seconds

If visitors have to work out what exactly you do, they’re already gone. It happens with headlines like “We deliver solutions” or “Quality since 2012” that carry no context.

Quick fix: put your offer into one sentence — who it’s for + what result + how. Example: “Web design for local service businesses that brings in more enquiries.”

2) Your most important button is invisible or too complicated

Plenty of websites have ten buttons but no clear main path. Or the CTA is too soft: “Learn more” instead of “Request a quote”.

Quick fix: pick one primary CTA (e.g. “Book a free consultation” or “Request a quote”) and repeat it in the right places: in the hero, after your services, after your case studies and in the footer.

3) Too little trust: no proof, no reasons, no “why you”

In Germany in particular, people compare very critically. If your site shows no trust signals, even a good offer feels risky.

Typical gaps:

  • No real references or case studies
  • No clear services (just “service”)
  • No person, no face behind the business
  • No reviews or results anyone can verify

Quick fix: add 3 simple trust building blocks:

  • A short introduction (who, why, for whom)
  • 2–3 projects or examples
  • 1–3 testimonials or Google reviews

4) Your website is slow or feels “broken” on a phone

Quick fix:

  • Compress images (WebP), no oversized hero images
  • Fewer animations on mobile
  • Bigger buttons (at least 44px tall)
  • Contact CTA always visible (top and bottom)

5) The contact form is a conversion killer

If the form is too long, has too many required fields or sets no clear expectation (“What happens next?”), people abandon it.

Quick fix: keep the form minimal:

  • Name
  • Email or phone
  • A short message — and directly beneath it: “Reply within 24 hours” or “We get back to you the same working day.”

Mini checklist: 10 minutes to check

Walk through your own site once, like a customer would:

  • Do I understand the offer straight away?
  • Do I know within 5 seconds what to do next?
  • Do I see proof and trust signals without scrolling far?
  • Is the site fast and clean on a phone?
  • Can I get in touch in under 30 seconds?

If you answer “no” to two or more of these, the website is most likely costing you enquiries.

Conclusion

You don’t always need a full redesign. Clear messaging, a tidy CTA system, better trust signals and a faster mobile experience are often enough to noticeably increase enquiries.
